This is of course the origin of a commonly heard slogan in German “Erst kommt das Fressen, dann die Moral” –roughly translated: first comes eating, then morality, which seems to me a very German sentiment, considering most Germans love of the comfort provided by food. And Brecht refers to the act of consumption with the verb reserved for when animals eat, as opposed to humans, which would be essen.

And for those interested in the German version, here's a recording of it by Ernst Busch, who starred in the 1928 production of Die Dreigroschenoper, where the song appears as the "second finale". I also stumbled across a really cool musician, whom I had not yet heard of, who hales from Michigan but now resides in Berlin: Daniel Kahn.
